Ruby Anne Simpson Beard, 78, of Columbus took her final breath here on earth and her first breath in heaven on January 12, 2019 at her home with her daughter by her side.
She was born at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus Texas on September 20, 1940 to Fred Alonzo "Suitcase" Simpson and Charline Dora Leyendecker Simpson Lichey. She was the eldest daughter with one brother, James Arthur "Jimmy" Simpson and step daughter of Robert Lichey after Freds passing.
She attended Glidden school from grades 1-4 and Columbus School until graduation in 1958. She was a six foot four Columbus Cardinal cheerleader, class favorite among her peers, outstanding athlete, and die hard Cardinal fan through and through. She was a two-year letterman, was chosen an all-district guard in 1954 and all-district forward in 1955. In January of 1957, Ruby set an all-time basketball scoring record of 72 points in one game against Spring at Blinn College, Brenham during a tournament which was the highest scoring done by any basketball player, boy or girl, in a single game. She was chosen on the all-tournament team there and also at the Bellville High School Tournament. Her record at that time was 72 points in one game, 544 in 16 for an average of 34 per game. She attended one year of college on a basketball scholarship until deciding that was too far from home and moved back.
Among the variety of jobs she held over the years her favorites were when she worked for a construction company which allowed her to travel and see the world, followed up with her last job of driving a school bus for Columbus ISD.
Ruby enjoyed her front porch watching nature and feeding her birds, keeping up with life and friends on Facebook, attending any athletic game she was able to watch and her monthly bus trips to the casinos in Louisiana.
As much as she enjoyed all of the above, nothing compared to her love for her grandsons, Koldin Scott Brown & Jerrette Clay Brown, her adopted future granddaughters, Tori Poenitzsch & Stormy Kasmiersky, her daughter Pennie Lyn Ledbetter & son-in-law Steve and niece Lisa Puente.
Ruby will always be remembered for her independence, determination, loyalty, courage, honesty, motivation, trust in God, enthusiasm for sports and her love for the Columbus Cardinals.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Friday, January 18, 2019 at Henneke Funeral Home; followed with a Memorial Service to be conducted at 6:30 pm at Henneke Funeral Home.
